If becoming healthier is one of your 2023 goals, but you’re not sure where to start, we’ve created a list of actionable steps you can take to start building a healthier body in 2023. Of course, every person is different, and everyone’s needs are different, but for in general, this is a good place to start. Always consult your doctor to make sure these steps are right for you.

1.    Get More Steps In

Walking is one of the most underrated forms of exercise there is. In general, shoot for 8,000-10,000 steps a day, but if you find that your current step count is pretty low, make sure you’re easing into shooting for this step count. Go from 2,000/day to 4-6,000/day and work your way up from there.

Try adding in steps in places you might not usually walk around. My favorites are:

•   Brushing your teeth

•   Talking on the phone

•   Waiting for your coffee in the morning

•   If you have a treadmill, sync your social media time with your walking

•   Clean your house! This is a great way of getting more movement in without realizing you’re doing it – and you get a clean house out of it!

•   Shoot for 10 minutes of walking for every hour of work, so that you’re not sitting for extended periods of time. These small moves start to add up!

2.    Find an Exercise You Love

People will not stick to things unless they enjoy doing them, so finding a type of exercise you love doing is key for staying consistent. If you hate running, don’t do it just because you’ve been told it’s healthy. Find a way to move your body that you enjoy. This can be the elliptical, walking, running, boxing/kickboxing, rowing, biking, yoga, pilates, barre, weightlifting, dance classes…anything that gets you to move your body that you enjoy doing is a win.

3.    Exercise 2-3 times a week

If you already move your body weekly, shoot for at least 2-3 times a week. If you don’t do any movement right now, that’s OK – start slow. Shoot for 1 time a week and work your way up to 2-3 times.

4.    Shoot for 7-8 hours of Sleep

Sleep is unbelievably important and underrated. While not always feasible, if you can shoot for 7-8 hours a night, you will feel the difference in the morning. Getting enough sleep will also help you curb hunger and cravings, in addition to helping your body function better as a whole.

5.    Eat a Balanced Diet

We literally are what we eat, and we need to fuel our bodies appropriately. In general, finding a balanced diet of macronutrients (carbs, protein, and fats) mixed in with fruits and veggies will fuel your body and give you energy for your day and your workouts. Do not be scared of carbs and fats – our body needs these macronutrients for energy! If you’re unsure of where to start, consider reaching out to a dietician to help you figure out the best nutrition plan for you.

6. Drink Water

Drinking enough water will give you energy, keep you hydrated, curb hunger, and keep your body functioning well as a whole. Shoot for about 8 8-ounce glasses of water a day.
