Janice Castanteen, LCSW
-
I am Janice Castanteen, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker with specialized training in treating children and families.
After completing my Masters in Social Work, I trained and worked as a medical social worker for HIP of NJ, focusing on adjustment to illness and the co-morbidity of chronic medical disease and mental health issues. I developed the AIDS Treatment protocols for working with patients diagnosed with HIV, then shifting my focus to working with families specializing in working with children traumatized by loss and abuse. I completed additional trainings to enhance my knowledge of working with families in crisis, parenting and child development, particular adolescence. As the Director of Family Based Services at Youth Consultation Service, I developed treatment protocols for children placed in foster care. Recognizing the impact that these disruptions in family life had on children and how important permanency planning and security is for all children. I dedicated myself to teaching others to work effectively with children and families and supervised treatment in various in-home behavioral programs before joining the outpatient group practice setting.
In my personal life, I am the mother of 2 grown children. Having lived in and marrying into the Hispanic culture, I am multi-cultural sensitive and proficient in Spanish. My education was at Rutgers University where I received a BSW in Social Work, then onto Columbia University where I received my MSW in Social Work. I have been a member of the National Association of Social Workers since 1979 and my practice is driven by the NASW Code of Ethics. My therapeutic approach is sensitive and empathic, yet realistic and goal oriented. I believe in empowering people by helping them discover their strengths and break the barriers which prevent them from functioning at their best.
My specialties include: working with young adults survivors of childhood physical, sexual and/or emotional, abuse; divorce and children exhibiting adjustment disorders and crisis intervention within families. Treatment utilizes behavior modification, traditional psychotherapy, family systems, cognitive-behavioral and supportive therapies. Other specialty areas include depression, panic disorder, mood disorders, anxiety, sexual abuse and trauma, self-injurious behavior, sexual gender issues, oppositional defiant disorder, impulse control disorders, anger management, adjustment disorders and domestic violence.
