Resilience Training Programs
Resilience Training
Specialized Therapy Associates offers a unique experiential method for resilience training that promotes stress management, emotional intelligence, and creative problem solving through role-playing, improvisation, art, journal writing, and mindfulness meditation practice for individuals or groups.
Research has identified sets of behaviors or competencies observed in people who have been identified as making resilient or highly adaptive responses to change. People who have been identified as resilient successfully accomplish goals efficiently and flexibly respond to change in spite of exposure to accumulative pressure from environmental stress. The resilient person has exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, can manage stress effectively, has personal integrity, and strives to make a creative contribution to the community.
Child and Adolescent Resilience
Children and adolescents face many challenges that require healthy and adaptive responses to change in the course of their lives. Children may be called upon to adapt to normally stressful situations such as school demands, or to more serious and challenging situations such as bullying, poverty, racism, divorce, exposure to domestic violence, emotional physical and sexual abuse, terrorism, and the traumatic loss of loved ones. Current findings from the research in child development and traumatic stress demonstrate that exposure to stressful situations can result in serious physical conditions, anxiety and depressive disorders, chronic worry, social inhibition and behavioral problems, academic disruption, and substance abuse.
The resilient response to stress can be thought of as a set of successful behaviors that children can learn to promote an adaptive and healthy response to change. Resilient behaviors can be practiced and become habitual responses to stressful situations. The serious effects of traumatic stress can also be ameliorated by engaging the child in resilient behaviors of healthy adaptation with parental support.
Principles followed in this program are based on the findings from studies and clinical practices that describe how some children who are exposed to even traumatic situations of stress respond resiliently and do not demonstrate the often observed maladaptive responses in children who are vulnerable to stress. Research and clinical experience shows that risk and protective factors for stress in families can be identified and successfully addressed in order to promote resilient responses in children and adolescents.
In this program, children will be evaluated and learn resilient behaviors for adaptive and creative responses to change and stress. Children who need intensive psychotherapeutic services for traumatic stress related difficulties will be identified by the professional staff and appropriate treatment provided. Child centered psychotherapy services are offered by professionals with specific training and experience with stress related problems in children and adolescents.
Parents in this program will receive specific information on how to assist their children in developing resilient behaviors in response to change and stress. Parents will receive information on child development, parental skills, promotion of resilient behaviors in their children, and if needed, parents will receive professional therapeutic consultation for the treatment of traumatic stress related symptoms and maladaptive behaviors. Parents will also learn effective strategies to manage their personal stress and practice adaptive responses to change in their own lives.
Adult Resilience
All adults face stressful situations. Stressful situations can be positive such as moving to a new home, or receiving a raise and promotion at work, or adults can face more seriously stressful situations such as divorce, domestic violence, history of child abuse, terrorism, combat exposure, and traumatic loss of loved ones. Research in the area of stress-related physical and mental illness have identified behaviors in adults that are associated with poor physical and psychological responses as well as, healthy and resilient behaviors in response to stress. In this program, adults will be evaluated and will learn adaptive behaviors for successful responses to stress. Adults exposed to traumatic stress will receive appropriate services for stress related difficulties.
Life Work Strategies Resilience Training for Corporate Settings
Corporate life is inherently stressful. Employees are faced with performance stress, competition, possible layoffs, and increasing pressure from corporate leadership for productivity. The responsibilities of corporate leadership are also inherently stressful. Research has identified sets of behaviors in the corporate settings that are associated with maladaptive and with resilient responses to stress.
In this program, on site and individual private consultation with training will be provided to identify and teach resilient behaviors for the promotion of adaptive responses to corporate change and stress. Goals for participants in this program are to improve communication within the corporate community, enhance social and emotional intelligence in corporate leaders, managers and employees.
